Dropped Object Hazard Prevention

What Are Dropped Objects

An object that falls from a height or a previous position is considered a dropped object. Safety protocols are essential to help prevent falling objects and causing damage or injury. Dropped objects are further classified into two categories, static and dynamic.
In the static category is any object that falls from a stationary position under its weight while a dynamic dropped object is an object that falls resulting from a secondary force.

What Causes Dropped Objects

Inadequate risk assessment, human factors, improperly stored tools or equipment, improper procedures, failed fixtures and fittings, poor housekeeping, collision and snagging, inadequate inspection, repair, and maintenance, redundant, neglected and homemade tools and equipment and environmental factors.
It is important to avoid having dropped objects in the workplace to understand the causes and effects to prevent future incidents from happening and serve as a guide to improve future assessments.

Inadequate risk assessment occurs when possible hazards are not identified correctly. There should be a thorough assessment to avoid these hazards.
